Route 5 – John Muir Way Kilsyth to Falkirk

Length: 13 miles

Route type: 1-way+public transport

Difficulty: Medium

The John Muir Way is a meandering 134-mile, coast to coast route stretching across lowland Scotland. One of Scotland’s great trails, it celebrates Scot’s born John Muir, the so-called ‘father of national parks’ in the United States of America. The John Muir Way includes a cycle route which runs through the Falkirk area.

Join the John Muir Way east of Kilsyth, where the trail meets the Forth and Clyde Canal and follows towpaths and tracks for 13 miles until it reaches Falkirk. At the town of Bonnybridge, leave the canal towpath and take the road signposted for the Roman Antonine Wall and Rough Castle. The track will take you past the historic site and down toward the Falkirk Wheel. From there, cycle up the hill, leaving the Wheel using the car park exit and go straight ahead at the mini roundabout. Cross the canal at an old stone bridge and ride up the hill to the trails at Callendar Estate and The Café at Canada Wood. From there, follow the trails down the hill, picking up the Union Canal towpath before ending your journey in Falkirk Town Centre.
