Route 6 - John Muir Way Falkirk to Linlithgow

Length: 8.5 miles

Route type: 1-way+public transport

Difficulty: Medium

The John Muir Way is a meandering 134-mile, coast to coast route stretching across lowland Scotland. One of Scotland’s great trails, it celebrates Scot’s born John Muir, the so-called ‘father of national parks’ in the United States of America. This 8.5-mile stretch of the John Muir Way runs from Falkirk to the ancient town of Linlithgow, birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots.

Start your ride at Callendar House and Park. Spot the remnants of the Roman Antonine Wall and enjoy views of the stunning French chateau-styled country house with its boating lake and woodlands as you ride around the grounds. Follow the John Muir Way up through the woods and out of the park until you reach the Forth & Clyde Canal towpath.

The towpath takes you to the beautiful Muiravonside Country Park and the burbling River Avon. Dismount to cross the towering Avon Aqueduct carefully, taking in the incredible views across farmland and hillsides as you go. The towpath will then take you to Linlithgow, the site of Linlithgow Palace and birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots.
