John Muir Way Tour of Falkirk & The Kelpies

Length: 11.5 miles

Route type: Loop

Difficulty: Low

Falkirk boasts the famous Kelpies as one of Scotland’s main tourist attractions. But the town has so much more to offer and this 18.4km circular route takes in some of its most beautiful natural sites as well as its more well-known places. For families, there’s also lots of opportunities for kids to stop and play or get a refreshing ice cream along the way.

Starting in Callendar park, cycle past the beautiful old house and through the woodland following the John Muir Way until you reach the Union Canal. Turn left and ride along the towpath before making your way to Westquarter Glen and its beautiful waterfall. The next part of the route will take you past Falkirk Football Stadium and on into the Helix Park, home of the majestic Kelpies. The Helix Park has plenty for kids to enjoy, including a large Adventure Zone play area, a splash zone and lagoon with boat and peddalo hire. You can also ride to the Kelpies for a tour of the iconic structures or to stop for refreshments at the visitor centre.

From the Kelpies, cross the canal to take the Forth & Clyde towpath all the way along to Rosebank whisky distillery. The distillery is in the process of being rennovated, ready to reopen in 2023. Leave the canal here and follow the road into Falkirk, stopping at the High Street for a quick look at the shops. Then head back to Callendar Park to complete the loop.
