Helix HArTT route

Length: 16 miles

Route type: Loop

Difficulty: Medium

This 26km, medium difficulty circular route, known as HArTT – Helix Around Town Trail - starts at The Helix and travels by cycleway, towpath and woodland trail past The Kelpies, The Falkirk Wheel and Callendar Park.

The route traces Falkirk’s perimeter and takes in many of the area’s lesser known ‘hidden gems’ and attractions as well as the more well-known tourist destinations. Ride through the natural attractions of The Wetland and River Carron, Abbotshaugh Woods and its artworks celebrating community connections, and the waterways of Westquarter Glenn. Your journey will take you through two beautifully lit canal tunnels – Roughcastle Tunnel at the Falkirk Wheel and the Falkirk Tunnel which forms part of the Union Canal.  You’ll also pass the historic industrial sites that helped shape Falkirk, including the old Carron Works, once the largest iron works in Europe, and the soon to reopen Rosebank Distillery.

With plenty of opportunities to pause and enjoy spectacular wildlife and history, the route is perfect for families as it runs mostly on traffic-free paths and tracks. There is only one very short, lightly trafficked on-road section plus a number of road crossings.
